Vintage Afghan “Elephant Foot" Carpet
A room-size vintage Afghan Ersari carpet in the classic fil pai ("elephant's foot") design — three columns of large octagonal guls, quartered in black and salmon, on a madder-red ground with small cross-form minor guls between. Stacked geometric borders and original wool fringe. Hand-knotted wool pile on a wool foundation, woven in northern Afghanistan by the Ersari Turkmen, one of the oldest tribal weaving traditions in Central Asia.
Mid-20th century. Low, even pile throughout with a soft, sun-faded patina that reads as age rather than wear. Good condition overall.
This is a true room-size rug (it took some doing to find a spot to lay it out flat) with the scale to anchor a living room, dining room, or primary bedroom. Pairs well with mid-century and Scandinavian pieces, where the saturated red and geometric repeat read as graphic rather than traditional.
