James Gibson Florida Highwaymen Landscape, Oil on Board

Original oil landscape in the Florida Highwaymen style, signed lower right and attributed to James Gibson (b. 1938, Fort Pierce, Florida). Palms and moss-draped trees frame an open stretch of water under a bright sky, painted with the quick, confident brushwork the Highwaymen are known for.

Gibson was one of the original Highwaymen, a group of Black artists from the Fort Pierce area who painted Florida landscapes in the 1950s and 60s and sold them door to door and from the roadside because galleries would not show their work. Their paintings are now collected widely; Gibson's own work has been owned by Steven Spielberg and hung in the White House.

Framed: 30" × 35". Image: 23½" × 28½".

Condition: a scratch to the middle of the painting and paint loss at the bottom right corner — please see photos. Signature is present; attribution has not been independently authenticated.
